Gopher Women Finish 16th at Vegas Showdown

The University of Minnesota women's golf team regrouped after shooting a 304 in the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Tuesday and shot a 4-over par 292 in the final round to finish in 16th place (+21, 885).
Gopher freshman Teresa Puga used a 1-under par 71 to help her finish as the Gophers top player in the shootout with a 2-over par 218, good for a tie for 40th place. Senior Paige Bromen concluded her final fall collegiate event in a tie for 45th place with a score of 3-over 219. Sophomore's Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi and Samantha Sommers finished in a tie for 63rd, 72nd and 87th, respectively.
Pepperdine added to its lead by shooting a 15-under 273 on Wednesday to claim the tournament title with a 54-hole score of 823 (-41). Oklahoma State took second with a score of 835 (-29) followed by Louisville (the first round leader) at 841(-23), UNLV at 845 (-19) and Washington at 852 (-12). Lisa McCloskey of Pepperdine carded a 54-hole total of 17-under 199 to defeat Therese Koelbaek of UNLV and Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville by one stroke for medalist honors.
The Gophers have a break in the schedule until Feb. 8-10 when they will travel to Rio Mar, Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Shootout. Minnesota is scheduled to participate in five spring events prior to the Big Ten Championships on Apr. 24-26.
