The No. 4 Minnesota women’s cross country team dominated the field in compiling 24 points to capture the title in the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings, S.D. on Saturday. The Golden Gophers were paced once again by junior Megan Duwell, who covered the 5-kilomter course at the Edgebrook Golf Course in a time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds.

Duwell was edged for the individual crown by Nebraska sophomore Lara Crofford, who clocked a time of 17:31. The Cornhuskers, however, finished a distant second in the team standings finishing with 58 points, more than double than that of Minnesota.

The Gophers once again showed their superior team depth by having five other runners join Duwell in the top 10 finishers. Mallory Van Ness finished fourth overall in a time of 17:46, starting a string of five straight Gophers to cross the finish line. Amy Laskowske was fifth (17:47), Heather Dorniden sixth (17:50), Jamie Cheever seventh (17:54) and Felicitas Mensing eighth (17:58).

Other Gopher finishes were Elizabeth Yetzer in 11th place (18:02), Nikki Swenson in 14th (18:14) and Ariella Deprenger-Gottfried in 17th (18:33). Gabriele Anderson missed the meet due to illness.

If the result of this meet sounds familiar, it should. Minnesota competed in two meets this weekend, winning both with 24 points. The Gophers, led by Meaghen Mason’s runner-up finish, won the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open on Friday.

Minnesota’s next competition is on Oct. 11, when the Gophers compete in the UMD Pine Hills Invitational.
