Golden Gophers Fall to Robert Morris 3-2

10/4/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

Despite rattling off 65 shots on goal, the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team failed to earn its first win of the season tonight with a 3-2 loss to Robert Morris. Minnesota attempted to come back from a 3-0 deficit, scoring a goal in the second and another at 18:55 in the third, but the Colonials held on to defeat the Golden Gophers, placing them at 0-1-0 on the season.

Robert Morris jumped out to a 2-0 lead when the Colonials scored at 8:02 and 17:46 in the first period. Morgan Beikirch scored a power-play goal over Kim Hanlon’s right shoulder, while Megan Picinic tallied the lone assist. Brianna Delaney scored an even-strength goal when she stuffed the puck under Hanlon’s pads for a goal to put the game at 2-0 at the 17:46 mark. Minnesota had 18 shots in the first period, including seven on the power-play, but couldn’t get it past RMU’s goalie Briana McLaughlin. One of Minnesota’s best chances of the first period came when sophomore Emily West had a short-handed breakaway attempt, but her shot went wide.

The Colonials put the game at 3-0 when Jacki Gibson scored at 5:47 in the second. Following the third goal, Minnesota replaced starting goaltender Kim Hanlon with sophomore goalie Jenny Lura. Minnesota’s Anne Schleper put the game back at a two-goal deficit when she scored a power-play goal at 6:42 in the second. Schleper was in front of the net and lifted the puck, top-shelf, for her first goal as a Golden Gopher. Monique Lamoureux and Jocelyne Lamoureux each assisted on the play to earn their first career points in a Gopher uniform.

After going a majority of the third period without a goal, Minnesota took a timeout at 18:10 and later pulled Lura to add the extra attacker. The Gophers used it to their advantage when Emily West scored with 1:05 remaining in the game, pulling the game within one, but Minnesota could not tie the game following the West goal.

By the end of the second period, Minnesota outshot the Colonials, 41-9 and later finished the game with a 65-10 shot margin. McLaughlin, who was a member of Team USA’s Under-22 Team, finished the game with 63 saves after she held the Gophers to one goal in 24 shots in the third period. McLaughlin had 18 saves in the first, 22 in the second and 23 in the third period to keep RMU in the game. She was later named the No. 1 star of the game for her performance.

The Gopher record for shots in a game is 72 and dates back to Feb. 13, 1999 when Minnesota earned a 10-0 win over Augsburg. It is the first time in school history the Gophers have opened a season with a loss, dating back to 1997 when the program was started at the University.

The Gophers will look to earn their first win of the season tomorrow as they face Robert Morris again at 7:07 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
