Tyler Wins 100 Breast at Minnesota Grand Prix

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team completed the first of the three-day Minnesota Grand Prix, tonight at the University Aquatic Center. Over 460 athletes are participating at the Gopher facility, which wraps up on Sunday.
Ashley Steenvoorden started the Gophers off with a third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Steenvoorden touched the wall in a time of 9:46.74, while Chloe Sutton won the event in 9:39.26. Katie Brosseau finished sixth in the same event with a time of 10:04.29.
Jillian Tyler won the 100 breaststroke when she held a winning time of 1:01.17, while Deidre DeWall finished fifth in the event in 1:04.95. Kaylee Jamison won the B Final in 1:04.39 and finished ninth overall, while Kimberly Kazika placed 17th overall when she won the C Final in 1:06.00.
Yuen Kobayashi led the Gophers in the 200 freestyle when she finished third in 1:49.21. Christine Jennings added a fifth-place time of 1:50.70, while Hannah Whitehead chipped in a seventh-place time of 1:51.34. Stacy Busack also competed in the event when she placed 10th overall (1:52.10) and Steenvoorden won the C Final in 1:52.96.
Although the Gophers didn’t take the top two spots in the 100 fly, Minnesota had five in the 100 fly A Final. Kaylee Jamison finished third (55.71), followed by Megan Braun (55.77) in fourth and Jenny Shaughnessy in fifth (55.92). Jenna Lennertz added a seventh-place showing (56.23) while former Gopher Roxane Akradi rounded out the A Final in eighth (56.38).
Minnesota had another two in the A Final of the 100 back. After Katie Kastes won the event in 1:59.86, DeWall placed second in 2:03.44. Kait Strickland held a time of 2:07.61 to finish fifth overall. Cory Miller competed in the B Final and finished 11th overall with a time of 2:07.62.
Minnesota finished the evening with a win in the 800 free relay. The group of Kobayashi, Jennings, Meredith McCarthy and Shaughnessy combined for a winning time of 7:20.31.
Minnesota returns to action tomorrow morning with the prelims starting at 9 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
