11/15/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey
The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team had three different goal scorers as the Golden Gophers defeated Bemidji State, 3-0, tonight at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. The Gophers (8-2-1 overall, 7-1-1 in the WCHA) and the Beavers (1-8-2, 0-7-0 in WCHA) play again tomorrow in a quick turnaround at 2 p.m.
Alyssa Grogan collected her first career shutout in the win over BSU and the team’s second overall in this season. Stopping all 16 Beaver shots on goal, Grogan improves to 4-0-1 on the season.
After the two teams went scoreless in the first period, Minnesota scored just 1:05 into the second period when Emily West scored off a deflection from a Kelly Seeler slapshot. Monique Lamoureux found Seeler at the high slot and wound up for the shot. West was in front of the net to add the tip-in as she scored her fourth goal of the season. Minnesota held a 15-2 shot ratio.
Seeler collected her first point as a Golden Gopher. With her assist, only one Gopher skater (Alexandra Zebro) is left to score a point during the 2008-09 season. Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux each have 14 points, followed by Gigi Marvin with 12 points and Sarah Erickson and Melanie Gagnon with 10.
Minnesota added to its lead when it scored two goals in the final period of play. Terra Rasmussen took advantage of a Melanie Gagnon shot at 6:47 in the second when she scored on the rebound attempt. Kelli Blankenship started the play and found Rasmussen at the Gopher blue line. She brought the puck into the Beaver zone and drop passed it to Gagnon who took a shot, which was saved by Zuzana Tomcikova. However, Rasmussen was there to add the rebound as it slid underneath the goalie’s pads for her second goal of the season. Monique Lamoureux scored her sixth goal of the season on an unassisted opportunity at 8:44 in the third. Lamoureux picked up the loose puck, brought it into the neutral zone and took a shot at the top of the right circle. Tomcikova made the save, but gave up a big rebound as Lamoureux placed it, five-hole for a two-goal lead.
Minnesota rattled off another 20 shots on goal to BSU’s five to finish the game at a 49-16 advantage. It was the second time this season that Minnesota had its second-highest shooting night of the season with its 49 shots. Minnesota fired off 50 shots against Robert Morris in the 7-1 win.
