Gophers Dominate Bemidji State 7-0

The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned its second shutout in two games as the Golden Gophers dominated the Bemidji State Beavers, 7-0, today at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. With the win, Minnesota improves to 9-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Minnesota split its goaltenders as Jenny Lura started, but Kim Hanlon came in midway through the second period. Hanlon had 20 saves, while Lura had seven in 25 minutes played. The last time the Gophers had back-to-back shutouts came against Minnesota State last year, Dec. 7-8.
The Gophers showed their depth today, as 11 student-athletes tallied points. Kelli Blankenship and Michelle Maunu led the scoring charge with three points, while Terra Rasmussen netted a career-high two goals and Gigi Marvin had a goal and an assist.
Minnesota took an early 2-0 lead when Jen Schoullis and Terra Rasmussen scored at 4:33 and 7:48 in the first period. Jen Schoullis took advantage of a rebound attempt at 4:33 to put the Gophers up, 1-0. Schoullis' linemates Chelsey Jones and Kelli Blankenship assisted on the play. The Gophers went up 2-0 when Rasmussen scored her second goal in as many games at 7:48 of the period. Rasmussen caught a pass from Michelle Maunu and placed the puck under BSU goalie Alana Mcelhinney’s right arm for her third goal of the season.
Minnesota dominated the Beavers throughout the first period of play. BSU did not have a shot on goal for the first 13 minutes of play. In fact, it was BSU’s first attempted shot of the game as well, with Minnesota holding an 18-2 lead after the first period. By the end of the game, Minnesota had 53 shots, while allowing 27 to BSU, including 14 in the third.
The Gophers continued their domination in the second period scoring another three goals. All goals during the period came during four-on-four play between the two teams. Minnesota scored two goals within the first minute of the period at :36 and :54 into the stanza. Emily West scored her fifth goal of the season, second of the series at :36 in the second on a Gopher four-on-four attempt. Minnesota scored just :18 after West’s goal when Monique Lamoureux scored her seventh goal of the season. Lamoureux brought the rifled in a shot just under the crossbar as her sister Jocelyne Lamoureux tallied the lone assist. The Gophers added to their lead when Kelli Blankenship scored on a rebound attempt at 9:31 in the second as Dagney Willey and Michelle Maunu tallied the assists.
Minnesota added to its lead when Marvin scored a goal of her own at 6:20 in the third with the assists going to Blankenship and Brittany Francis. Rasmussen scored her second goal of the game at 11:15 with the assists going to both Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux.
On the weekend, Minnesota had 13 players earn a point. Defensemen Kelly Seeler and Melanie Gagnon tallied assists in yesterday’s game.
Minnesota hosts Minnesota State, Nov. 21-22 at Ridder Arena. Friday’s game is set for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday’s game is a 4:07 p.m. tilt.
