Francis and Lamoureux Lead Gophers to 2-1 Win

The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned a 2-1 win over Minnesota State University, Mankato, tonight at Ridder Arena in front of 1,099 fans. The Golden Gophers improve to 10-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. MSU drops to 6-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference action.

Although both teams fired off seven shots, neither could find the back of the net in the first period. However, Minnesota rattled off 17 shots in the second period, including seven during the power play to score at power-play goal at 13:25 in the second. Melanie Gagnon found Brittany Francis at the backdoor just in front of the goal line. Francis lifted the puck the the top-right corner for her third goal of the season. Jocelyne Lamoureux had the second assist.

Minnesota added the insurance goal when Monique Lamoureux scored her second short-handed goal of the season at 10:43 in the third. Gagnon found Lamoureux near the MSU blueline and Lamoureux scored on semi-breakaway to cushion the Gophers’ lead.

However, MSU scored its first power-play goal in seven chances at 15:47 in the third period from Holly Snyder. The Mavericks tried to tie up the game by taking a timeout after Minnesota was called with a penalty at 18:31 in the third to add the extra attacker. However, MSU was called with hooking call at 19:20 to solidify the Gopher win.

Minnesota was called for eight penalties, while MSU had six. In the first, Minnesota was able to hold off MSU, who had a five-on-three attempt for 1:46 when two Gopher players were called for back-to-back interference calls. However, Minnesota allowed just one shot during the entire time to hold the Mavericks scoreless.

The two teams will compete again tomorrow afternoon. Following the Gophers’ alumni game at noon, the current Gopher team plays MSU tomorrow at 4 p.m.
