Gophers Close Fall Season at Southland Regatta

The University of Minnesota rowing team closed out its fall season at the Southland Regatta, today, in Chicago, Ill. Minnesota had both its varsity and novice rosters compete in the regatta. The Gophers will train at the University Boathouse until the start of their spring season in March.
Minnesota started the day by racing in the overall Varsity Eight race. Based off their finish in the first race, the Gophers had to qualify into the Finals races. Minnesota’s A boat held the highest finish (4th), followed by Minnesota B (12th), Minnesota D (17) and Minnesota C (22). Of the four boats, three qualified to move onto the Finals in the Gophers’ A, B and D boats. Competing in Minnesota’s C boat was Linnea Trandem, Katelyn Nichols, Shannon Gates, Tracy Merth, Debbie Brzozowski, Michelle Murphy, Christine Cira, Kate Ladell and Alyssa Kast.
Minnesota’s A boat competed against Michigan State, Virginia and Wisconsin as the Gophers finished fourth. Michigan State won Varsity A Final with a time of 6:46.50, while Virginia finished in a time of 6:48.60 and Wisconsin placed third in 6:49.40. Minnesota’s boat of Illana Ostrin, Lisa Pugh, Cassie Drozynski, Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham and Katie Johnson at bow finished in 6:58.90.
The Gopher B boat of Erica Niemiec, Emily Baxter at stroke, Tina Cho, Ali Fisher, Erin Desmond, Emily Johnson, Krystal Arbery, Molly Kalmoe and Michele Peterson at bow won the Varsity C event in a time of 7:08.00. Iowa B placed second in 7:08.80, followed by Indiana (7:12.20) and Notre Dame (7:12.30) in third.
The Gopher D boat of Monika Folker, Kristin Haag, Erika Berg, Megan Lenarz, Sarah Krueger, Brenna Galvin, Nora Kudronowicz, Mikaela Rogers and Teresa Logemann placed second in the Varsity Eight Final E race. Indiana B won the event in a time of 7:20.700, followed by Minnesota’s time of 7:24.900. Indiana C (7:29.200) and Notre Dame C (7:32.500) was fourth overall.
Along with varsity action, Minnesota had three boats compete in novice action. Minnesota’s top boat was Minnesota A, which finished fourth out of 17 boats. The Gopher A boat included coxswain Steph Shodis, Courtney Podritz, Quinn Anderson, Yasmin Khan, Emma Porter, Alli Fast, Leah Rogotzke, Maddy Bourgeois and Laura Salzman clocked a time of 18:39.689, while Wisconsin won the event in 17:33.480.
Minnesota’s B and C boats finished back-to-back in 12th and 13th place. Minnesota B had Sadie Shaw, Julie Pozner, Kristi Anderson, Sarah McKenzie, Grace Lorig, Caitlin Boon, Hannah Okray, Lindsey Partridge and Brittany Storoz and finished in a time of 19:48.505. Minnesota C, who included Sara Baldvins, Laura Obrycki, Maddy Etrheim, Emma Eldridge, Kaonue Xiong, Liz Farmer, Liz Just, Kari Eloranta and Tori Lund, finished in 19:59.466.
