University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving head coach Dennis Dale announced today that Michael McBroom has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Minnesota in 2009-10.

The senior from The Woodlands, Texas was a 2008 Olympic Trials participant and finished fourth in the 500 freestyle at the 2008 Texas State 5A meet. McBroom finished fifth in the 1500-meter freestyle and seventh in the 800-meter free at U.S. Junior Nationals this August at University Aquatic Center.

McBroom is a senior at The Woodlands High School while also competing for the The Woodlands Swim Team that produced current Gopher women's swimming All-American Meredith McCarthy. McBroom is a NISCA High School All-American and was ranked in the top 75 national recruits for the 2009-10 season by collegeswimming.com.

"We are very happy to add Michael to our program," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "Michael grew up here in Minnesota in the western suburbs. He was coached by one of our former Gopher swimmers, Erick Hulseman and still has some family here in the Twin Cities. It is great to have Michael coming back home to Minnesota. Even more exciting are his accomplishments in the pool. He competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials and will fit in great with our team in that respect. We had 37 Olympic Trial participants this past summer. That was the second largest team at Olympic Trials. 32 of those have eligibility remaining and are competing for the Gophers this year. Michael will join a long history of great distance swimmers here at Minnesota this Fall. We are delighted to have him as a Golden Gopher."

His top times are 4:32.19 in the 500 free, 9:09.90 in the 1000 free, 15:36.81 in the 1650 free (short course yards), 4:03.58 in the 400-meter free, 8:15.66 in the 800 free and 15:43.21 in the 1500-meter free (long course meters).

McBroom is the first member of the 2009-10 Gopher signing class.
