The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team hosts No. 9 Harvard, this weekend at Ridder Arena. The Gophers and Crimson battle on Friday at 6:07 p.m, while competing at 4:07 p.m. on Saturday.

TOYS FOR TOTS/COATS FOR KIDS
The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team will support the Toys for Tots and Coats for Kids organizations during this weekend’s series against Harvard. Fans who donate a new toy or a new/slightly used coat can receive free admission. For more information, please call the marketing office at (612) 625-4879.

THE SERIES
The Golden Gophers hold a slight 6-4-0 lead in the all-time series against the Crimson, dating back to 1997. It is the first time Minnesota and Harvard have competed against each other since Minnesota won the national championship against the Crimson in 2005.

THE HARVARD CRIMSON
Harvard enters the Minnesota series with a 4-2-2 overall and conference record. Last weekend, the Crimson tied Colgate, 5-5 and went on to defeat Cornell, 5-1, last Saturday. The Gopher series marks the first non-conference play for the Crimson, while they also play New Hampshire following the Minnesota series. Harvard is led in scoring by senior forward Sarah Wilson, who has six goals and six assists for 12 points. Of their 24-player roster, three hail from the state of Minnesota in Kathryn Farni (Minnetonka, Minn.), Anna McDonald (New Brighton, Minn.) and Katharine Chute (Wayzata, Minn.). Arguably one of the best forwards in women’s college hockey is senior Sarah Vaillancourt.  Last year, Vaillancourt won the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award after scoring 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points. She was named the ECAC Player of the Year and ranked fifth in the nation in overall scoring when she averaged 1.82 points per game last season as a junior.

DID YOU KNOW?
Minnesota head coach Brad Frost and Harvard head coach Katey Stone recently coached together on the international level. Stone, the head coach of the U.S. Select Team, and Frost, the assistant coach, helped Team USA to a tournament win at the Four Nation’s Cup, Nov. 4-9 in Lake Placid, N.Y. In fact, it was the second time the two coaches were on the same bench in international play. Stone and Frost were coaches with the 2006 U.S. Under-22 Team.

ON THE DOCKET
The University of Minnesota will compete in the final series of the 2008 calendar year when it travels to North Dakota, Dec. 5-6. Friday’s game is set for a 7:07 p.m. start, while Saturday’s tilt is at 4:07 p.m. UND is currently fifth in the WCHA standings with 11 points in 10 games played, while Minnesota is second with 19 points in 10 contests. Next home game is not until after the new year begins, when Bemidji State comes to town, Jan. 16-17 at 6:07 and 4:07 p.m.
