Gophers Cruise to Fourth Dual Win of the Season

The No. 12 Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team defeated Iowa, 185.5-110.5 this evening at University Aquatic Center. The Gophers won 12 of 16 events to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The Gophers immediately jumped out to a lead, winning the 200 medley relay team of Jenna Lennertz, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack won easily in a time of 1:41.98. The Gophers B team of Deidre DeWall, Kimberly Kazika, Megan Braun and Meredith McCarthy also finished third in 1:45.83.
Freshman Lissa Tommerdahl took first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 1:04.11 and freshman Marissa Davies in second with a time of 10:06.73.
In the 200 free, it was a 1-2-3 Gopher finish with Hannah Whitehead touching first in 1:51.31 while Christine Jennings and Stacy Busack tying for second with times of 1:51.48.
In the 100 backstroke, Iowa picked up its first event win when Daniela Cubelic took first in 56.72. Deidre DeWall was second in 56.87 and Jenny Shaughnessy placed third in 57.43. Minnesota continued to dominate the meet, posting a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Kaylee Jamison took first with a time of 1:04.40 and junior Kazika was second in 1:05.75.
Kait Strickland came on late to steal a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.13 to edge Iowa’s Laura Mozdzen, who took second in 2:05.55. Senior Yuen Kobayashi placed third in a time of 2:05.64.
Minnesota took the top two spots in the 50 free. McCarthy won the event in 23.76, while Meagan Radecke finished second in 23.93. Erin Holtmeyer placed fourth overall in 24.44. Iowa won the 100 free, while Minnesota’s Alison Eggers and Yuen Kobayashi placed second and third in the stroke (51.81 and 51.97).
Shaughnessy got the Gophers back on track with a win in the 200 back (2:01.17). Cory Miller (2:06.00) and Castina Wabeke (2:07.09) placed third and fourth overall. Minnesota went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 breaststroke tonight. Kazika won it in 2:22.38, followed by Avery Michienzi (2:25.90) and Corina Hopkins-Vacca (2:25.92). Although she didn’t garner any of the Gopher points, Andrea Hanson placed fourth in 2:26.06.
Ashley Steenvoorden took home the 500 free win when she clocked a time of 4:54.77, while Whitehead finished second in 4:56.27. DeWall won the 100 fly (56.10), while Tyler won the last individual event of the night in the 200 IM (2:03.61).
Minnesota closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay. Busack, McCarthy, Radecke and Eggers combined for a time of 1:33.77.
In diving action, Taylor Enerson was the lone Gopher to compete in both boards. Enerson finished fourth overall in the 3-meter (207.53) and fourth in the 1-meter (227.85). Maggie Thomas finished third in the 3-meter (22.7.43), while Emma Shankland held a score of 192.30 for fifth.
The Gophers return to action next weekend when they host the Minnesota Grand Prix/Diving Invitational November 14-16.
