Matson to Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery

Minnesota freshman center Taylor Matson will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 season with a knee injury suffered in the Gophers’ loss to Michigan on Friday. Matson will undergo surgery in the upcoming weeks.

Matson is a native of Mound, Minn. and played on a Minnesota state high school championship team at Academy of Holy Angels. He was injured early in the first period of Friday’s game and had enjoyed a solid start to his collegiate career, appearing in the team’s first 13 games. Matson was a key to Minnesota’s penalty kill unit, which currently ranks second in the nation. He also scored a goal in a win over New Hampshire.

“It’s very disappointing for Taylor,” Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. “He was off to a great start this season and worked hard to earn a place in the lineup, but this also provides an opportunity for someone else to step up and fill his spot.”

Minnesota has a weekend off before returning to action on Dec. 13-14 against Colorado College at Mariucci Arena.
