No. 3 Huskers Down Gopher Grapplers

The No. 7 University of Minnesota wrestling team (3-1) dropped a 21-18 dual meet decision to No. 3 Nebraska (4-0) on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. The loss was the first of the young dual season for the Gophers.
Minnesota sophomore Mike Thorn staked the Gophers to an early 6-0 lead when he pinned Nebraska’s Curtis Salazar in just 3:47 at 141 pounds in the first match of the meet. Thorn recorded a takedown in the first period and added a reversal in the second before sticking Salazar midway through the second frame.
The Huskers won the next six matches of the afternoon to vault themselves to a 21-6 lead through the 197-pound match.
Minnesota redshirt freshman Sonny Yohn gave the Huskers’ 13th-ranked Vince Jones a run for his money at 184 pounds. The Alamosa, Colo. native recorded a takedown in the opening period and a reversal in the second, but Jones parlayed a pair of takedowns of his own and a reversal to earn a 7-5 decision victory.
Gopher sophomore Joe Nord recorded an upset in the heavyweight bout, gaining a 6-2 decision victory over No. 12 Tucker Lane. Nord rallied from a 1-0 deficit and notched a reversal and then a nearfall in the third period to earn the victory and trim the Minnesota deficit to 21-9.
Zach Sanders recorded his team-leading fifth technical fall of the season when he recorded a 22-5 win over Nebraska’s Andy Pokorny at 125 pounds. With his victory, Sanders improves to 16-1 on the season.
Two-time All-American Jayson Ness bested the Huskers’ Matt Vacanti with a 9-0 major decision at 133 pounds in the final bout of the afternoon. Ness’ victory improves his season record to 15-1.
Minnesota will open its home dual season when they welcome No. 13 Oklahoma State to the University Sports Pavilion on New Year’s Day. Tickets for the 2:00 p.m. dual meet are still available and can be purchased by calling 1-800-U-GOPHER or by contacting the Gopher Ticket Office at 612-624-8080.
