Grogan and Lamoureuxs Lead Gophers to a 4-0 Win

12/6/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

Monique Lamoureux had a goal and two assists and Alyssa Grogan recorded her second shutout of her short career to lead the No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team to a 4-0 win over North Dakota, tonight at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in front of 1,520 fans. Grogan had 24 saves to help the Gophers to their 11th Western Collegiate Hockey Association win of the season. Minnesota is now 14-2-1 overall and 11-1-1 in conference action.

The Golden Gophers got on the board first when Gigi Marvin scored her 11th goal of the season at 13:41 in the first period. Marvin took a shot on net, which went off a UND player and into the net. Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux each had an assist in the play.

Minnesota added to its lead when Jocelyne Lamoureux scored on a rebound attempt at 7:26 in the second period. While on the power-play, Jocelyne netted her seventh goal of the season after her sister, Monique, took the initial shot. Jen Schoullis started the play and was credited with the second assist.

UND had its opportunities in the second when they had two five-on-three chances during the period. The first came for 1:46, but the Gophers were able to hold off the Sioux for the duration. Grogan made some great saves during the second UND 5-on-3 attempt. During that time, Rachael Drazan was called for a checking penalty, giving UND their third 5-on-3 attempt.

However, as Minnesota returned one of the two players to the ice, the Gophers went on the offensive attack. Michelle Maunu started the play as she banked the puck off the backboard and it rang around to Emily West. Bringing the puck out of the defensive zone, West fed Monique Lamoureux the puck. On a breakaway, she fired the puck, five-hole, past Kirkham for her 12th goal of the season and third short-handed goal of the year at 1:14 in the third period.

Minnesota killed off UND’s fourth 5-on-3 opportunity of the night. During the attempt, the Sioux tried pulling Kirkham to add a three-person advantage, but Minnesota was still able to hold them off to keep the shutout alive.

West scored a goal of her own 14:21 in the third period when she went top shelf for her seventh goal of the season with a single assist to Schoullis.

Minnesota was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UND was 0-for-12 on the power play. Minnesota had 13 penalties, while UND had five.

The win tonight marks Grogan’s seventh of the year. Since her first career start against Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 10, Grogan has not allowed more than one goal in her last seven games.

Minnesota and North Dakota will conclude the series tomorrow at 4:07 p.m.
