Tyler Earns Second Automatic Qualifying Time

For the second-straight night, Jillian Tyler automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships to lead the No. 9 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team at the final day of the Ohio State Invitational, tonight in Columbus, Ohio.
After setting a career-best time of 58.80 in the 100 breaststroke last night, Tyler earned another automatic time in the 200 breaststroke. While clocking a time of 2:12.30 in the preliminaries, Tyler flew down the lane in a time of 2:08.52. Her time was also a school record, breaking her own record (2:10.82) set last year at the Big Ten Championships. Her time was also a pool record.
Minnesota dominated the meet from start to finish as it closed out the meet with 1271 points. The Golden Gophers held a 428-point lead over second-place finisher Penn State (843) and and 813 points more than third-place Notre Dame (458). In all, Minnesota broke 13 school records, including in the
Minnesota held the top three spots in the 1,650 free. Ashley Steenvoorden won the event with a career-best and meet record time of 16:03.04. She also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in March. Christine Jennings followed with a second-place provisional time of 16:16.69, while Yuen Kobayashi was third when she touched the wall in 16:18.86, also a provisional qualifying time.
Castina Wabeke won her second event of the meet, this time in the 200 backstroke. Wabeke went from 2:02.43 in the prelims to improve to 1:56.95, which was a meet record and provisional time. Her time was also a school record, breaking her own time of 1:57.37 in which she held her previous-best time at the Big Ten Championships last year. Jenny Shaughnessy was fourth overall in the same event (1:59.48), while Andrea Hanson was sixth (2:00.72).
Like the 1650 free, Minnesota went 1,2,3 in the 100 freestyle and took four of the top eight spots. Stacy Busack held a school record with a time of 48.32, which also set a meet record and provisionally qualified for NCAAs. Meredith McCarthy followed in second (49.00) while Meagan Radecke was third (49.94). Alison Eggers also made the championship final and held a finals time of 50.60, which was good enough for seventh overall.
Minnesota concluded the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Busack, McCarthy, Radecke and Eggers added a season-best, meet record of 3:18.39. Minnesota’s B relay of Megan Braun, Shaughnessy, Kaylee Jamison and Marissa Davies added a time of 3:23.56.
In diving action, Taylor Enerson finished 10th overall in the platform. She had a score of 183.60.
Minnesota will have nearly a month off from competition as it travels to Kona, Hawaii as the Gophers go on their annual winter training trip. The training trip begins December 29 and runs until Jan. 15.
