Sparked by six points by Korinne Campbell, Minnesota used 17-4 run in the last seven minutes of the first half to take control, going on to a 68-48 victory over Northwestern in Williams Arena on Sunday. Emily Fox scored 24 points to lead the Golden Gophers, who improve to 17-8 overall and 8-5 in Big Ten play.
Northwestern (4-10, 0-12) stuck with the Gophers early on bolstered by two early three-pointers by point guard Nadia Bibbs. Bibbs’ second triple broke a 17-17 tie and gave the Wildcats their first lead. Meshia Reed, who led the Wildcats with 11 points, hit a bucket to put Northwestern up by five points at 23-17 with 7:03 left before halftime.
When the Gophers need a big basket they look first to Emily Fox and once again the spirited guard came through. Fox ran off several baseline screens, then nailed a three-pointer from deep on the right baseline to ignite a Minnesota 13-0 run. The Gophers scored on their next three possessions, posting up Campbell on the block against a smaller Northwestern defender for two easy lay-ins.
While the Gophers hit eight of their last 11 shots in the first half, Northwestern went cold from the field hitting just one shot in the last seven minutes of the first half. Minnesota led 34-24 at intermission with Fox (14) and Leslie Knight (12) already in double figures.
After shooting 57.7 percent in the first half, Minnesota cooled a bit offensively but made up for it by hitting the boards. The Gophers pulled down 11 offensive rebounds in the second half, only one less than Northwestern’s total of 12.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half, while Minnesota committed a pair of turnovers, to bring Northwestern to within five points (34-29) two minutes in. Fox swung the momentum back to Minnesota with a steal, sprinting for a lay-up, drawing the foul and converting the three-point play. That kicked off an 11-0 Gopher run that put the game away.
Katie Ohm, who had missed her first three attempts from long range, swished a trey with 33 seconds left to give the Gophers their biggest lead of the game, 20 points, with the final score.
Knight, the second-leading scorer in the Big Ten, finished with 18 points and five asssits. Campbell finished with 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard Brittany McCoy dished out a career-high nine assists.
Minnesota embarks on an important Big Ten road tip next week with games at Penn State (Feb. 14) and at Iowa (Feb. 17).
