The University of Minnesota rowing team opened the spring season with four wins in a dual competition against Tennessee, today, in Knoxville, Tenn. Minnesota fell in the First Varsity Eight competition and in the Second Varsity Four, but defeated the Lady Vols in the Second Varsity Eight, the Varsity Four and both novice boats to start the spring campaign.
Tennessee, who is ranked seventh in the nation sprinted to the finish line to win the race by a score of 6:55.7, while Minnesota placed second in 6:58.17. The two teams were nip and tuck through the first half of the race and the Gophers were ahead at 500-meters remaining, but the Lady Vols sprinted past the Gophers with 300 meters remaining for the win. Minnesota's boat consisted of Megan Flannery, Laura Jatautaite at stroke, Mary Ann Weinzierl, Jennifer Barnes, Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Mulvey, Tina Cho and Lisa Pugh at bow. The Gophers are ranked 13th in the preseason rankings.
"I thought we performed very well today," head coach Wendy Davis said. "We haven't been able to compete very much this season and I thought that if we were within three seconds of the Tennessee at this time in the season, we would be in good shape. We were really nip and tuck with one of the fastest boats in the country until they sprinted ahead of us at the end. I was pleased to see how well we did and I think it's a great sign of things to come. We are looking forward to coming home and training and prepare for Iowa next weekend."
