Gophers Win Seven Events in a Sweep Over Kansas

The University of Minnesota rowing team won all seven races contested against Kansas, tonight at Lake Phalen. The Golden Gophers' duel against Jayhawks was the final tune-up before the Gophers compete at the Big Ten Championships, May 3 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Minnesota and Kansas raced in rainy conditions with a five mile-per-hour tailwind.

The Gophers' First Varsity Eight started the night with a win over Kansas. The 16th-ranked Minnesota boat of coxswain Megan Flannery, Laura Jatautaite at stroke, Mary Ann Weinzierl, Jenny Barnes, Ashley Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Katie Johnson and Lisa Pugh at bow won the event in a time of 6:16.7 to 6:44.1. In Second Varsity Eight, the Gophers boat of Linnea Trandem, Lauren VanProosdy, Emily Baxter, Tina Cho, Katie Simpson, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham, Kathryn Switalski and Christine O'Donnell won in a time of 6:25.3. Kansas posted a time of 6:57.3 for second.

The Gophers concluded varsity competition by winning both fours event. Minnesota's First Varsity Four of Erica Niemiec, Jess Veit, Sarah Krueger, Ali Fisher and Emily Johnson crossed the finish line in a winning time of 7:06.3 to Kansas' time of 7:41.0. Minnesota had two boats in the Second Varsity Four race. The Gophers' A boat of Monika Folker, Michele Peterson, Erin Desmond, Michelle Murphy and Jessica Norman at bow won in a time of 7:27.9. Minnesota's B boat of Kate Stadum, Megan Lenarz, Brenna Galvin, Katelyn Nichols and Christine Cira came in second in a time of 7:45.8. Kansas posted a time of 8:10.7 to place third in the event.

The Gophers earned three wins in novice action as well. The Gophers' First Novice Eight of Dana Landseidel, Kristin Haag, Kate Ladell, Alyssa Kast, Molly Kalmoe, Shannon Gates, Tracy Merth, Liz Gruse and Teresa Logemann at bow won in a time of 6:45.5 to Kansas' time of 6:49.2. Minnesota's Second Novice Eight of Rebecca Emmons, Ann Haberman, Alex Gregory, Dani Prestegard, Katherine Foster, Mikaela Rogers, Carrie Gahr, Jessica Mayers and Sarah Paschke chipped in a winning time of 6:52.7, while Kansas came in at 7:00.4. The Gophers and Jayhawks also raced in Third Novice Eight event as well. Minnesota's boat of Jessica Tam, Lauren Rynders, Chonquita Jones, Vanessa Hamer, Sara Swenson, Melinda Brown, Kristi Sroka, Randi Schroeder and Sam Preston at bow won in a time of 7:17.9. Kansas clocked a second-place time of 7:32.8.

"We are really thankful that we were able to get in these races before tomorrow," head coach Wendy Davis said. "We were lucky that Kansas was willing to get off the bus and be able to race because the weather would not have been good rowing conditions. We are very pleased to get in our fourth race of the spring season and be able to prepare for next weekend and the Big Ten Championships."
