The Big Ten Conference today announced that Gopher golfers Clayton Rask and Victor Almstrom have been named to the 2008 men's golf All-Big Ten First Team. Also, Rask was Minnesota's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

A senior from Ostego, Minn., Rask led the Gophers in the fall and spring seasons in stroke average at 71.33 and 74, respectively. His combined stroke average of 72.78 this season is the 13th-lowest since 1979 for Minnesota. Also, Rask's career stroke average of 74.10 ties former Gopher Joe Gullion for ninth place on Minnesota's list since 1979.

Rask compiled seven top 20 finishes this season, six of which were also top-10 finishes. He finished tied for first in back-to-back tournaments, the Windon Memorial and the Prestige at PGA West. In the Windon Memorial, he carded a 7-under 206, the lowest 54-hole score of his career.

A native of Vallingby, Sweden, Almstrom earns his first All-Big Ten First Team honor after finishing in a tie for fifth with a 5-over 293 at the conference championships. An Honorable Mention All-American in 2007, he played in 10 of the Gophers' 11 tournaments in 2007-08 and finished with a combined stroke average of 73.36, 22nd lowest for the Gophers since 1979.

Almstrom garnered three top-10 finishes this season, including a tie for second place at the Ping/Golfweek Preview. He scored a 5-under 211 in the tournament for his lowest 54-hole round of the season. Also, he tied his career-low score of 67 in the Windon Memorial for one of his three aforementioned top-10 finishes.

The conference office also announced that Rask is Minnesota's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. All student-athletes that are chosen for the award are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. He is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
