Gophers Earn Boat of the Week Honors

The Big Ten Conference has announced that University of Minnesota's First Varsity Eight has been named Big Ten Boat of the Week for their winning performance over Kansas last weekend. It is the first honor for the Gophers' this season and the 10th in the program's history.
The nationally 16th-ranked Gophers defeated Kansas on April 25 to earn this week’s honor. The Gopher boat won the event with a time of 6:16.70 to race past the Jayhawks who clocked in at 6:44.10. The 1V8 consisted of coxswain Megan Flannery, Laura Jatautaite at stroke, Mary Ann Weinzieri, Jenny Barnes, Ashley Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Katie Johnson and Lisa Pugh at bow.
The 1V8 and the rest of the Golden Gophers will defend their Big Ten championship title this weekend, when they travel to Ann Arbor on May 3 to compete in the Big Ten Championships. Heats begin at 8 a.m., while the finals run from noon until 2:45 p.m. The All-Big Ten team will also be announced at that time.
