Gophers Look to Defend Big Ten Title This Weekend

GOPHERS HEAD TO BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The University of Minnesota rowing team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete at the Big Ten Championships, May 3 on Belleville Lake. The Golden Gophers will look to defend their Big Ten title when they won their first in school history in 2007. Heats begin at 8 a.m., while finals are slated for a noon start.
GOPHER SEEDINGS
The University of Minnesota will compete in three of the first heats and three in the second heats. The Gophers’ First Varsity Eight holds the No. 4 seed and will race in the second heat in lane three. The Gophers’ 2V8 has the fifth-seed and will race in the first lane of the second heat. Minnesota’s highest seed in varsity competition is in the 1V4, where the Gophers are seeded second and race in the third lane of the first heat. A full schedule is listed below, while the times in bold are the Gopher heats. In order to advance to the Grand Final, each boat must finish in the top two of their heat, while the rest fall to the Petite Final.

BIG TEN AND THE RANKINGS
The Big Ten is well represented within the CRCA Varsity Eight rankings. Michigan State leads the Big Ten in the rankings with a sixth-place ranking, followed by Michigan in ninth. Ohio State is ranked 13th overall, while Minnesota is 16th in the nation. Wisconsin is not ranked, but is receiving votes.
PROJECTED LINEUPS
As Minnesota gears up for the Big Ten Championship, the Gophers will keep a majority of their lineups the same as in the dual against Kansas. In the 1V8 is coxswain Megan Flannery, Laura Jatautaite at stroke, Mary Ann Weinzieri, Jenny Barnes, Ashley Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Katie Johnson and Lisa Pugh at bow. In the 2V8, the Gophers will have coxswain Linnea Trandem, Lauren VanProosdy, Emily Baxter, Tina Cho, Katie Simpson, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham, Kathryn Switalski and Christine O'Donnell at bow. Minnesota's First Varsity Four is Erica Niemiec, Jess Veit, Sarah Krueger, Ali Fisher and Emily Johnson, while the 2V4 will be Monika Folker, Michele Peterson, Erin Desmond, Michelle Murphy and Jessica Norman at bow. In the First Novice Eight is coxswain Dana Landseidel, Kristin Haag, Kate Ladell, Alyssa Kast, Molly Kalmoe, Shannon Gates, Tracy Merth, Liz Gruse and Teresa Logemann at bow. Finally in the 2N8 is Rebecca Emmons, Ann Haberman, Lauren Rynders, Dani Prestegard, Alex Gregory, Mikaela Rogers, Carrie Gahr, Jessica Mayers and Sarah Paschke.
2007 BIG TEN RECAP
In just seven seasons since the inception of the Minnesota rowing program, the Golden Gophers earned its first-ever Big Ten Championship last year in Madison, Wis. The Gophers dominated the championship as they set a Big Ten Championship record for the most points scored with 150. The Gophers won four of six races and advanced all six boats to the Grand Finals. The Maroon and Gold held a 33-point advantage over second-place Michigan, who had 117 points, while Ohio State rounded out the top three with 103 points. The Gophers won the Second Varsity Eight, the First and Second Varsity Four races and the First Novice Eight. It was the first time in school history that the Gophers won the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final. The First and Second Varsity Four wins marked the second straight year the Gophers had won their races and the third in school history for the First Novice Eight. Along with the team award, Jenny Barnes and Cheryl Wick were named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Sally Olson and Erika Bartkute were named second-team All-Big Ten. Wick, the Gophers’ team captain, was also named to the Big Ten’s Sportsmanship award.
PAST BIG TEN CHAMPIONS
Since the Big Ten Conference has recognized rowing as a conference sport, four teams have won the championship. The First Big Ten champion in the sport was Michigan. Since the start, the Wolverines have won the league championships four years, while Ohio State won in 2004 and 2006. Michigan State won it in 2005 and the Gophers became the latest champion in 2007 to become the fourth in league history.
BIG TEN HONORS
Following the Big Ten Championships, the league will announce its first and second All-Big Ten Team, the athlete of the year, coach of the year and freshman of the year. Beth Hornby was the Gophers’ first All-Big Ten honoree, while Melissa Roche earned the honor in 2002, 03 and 04. At last year’s Big Ten Championship, Jenny Barnes and Cheryl Wick was named First Team All-Big Ten, while Sally Olson and Erika Bartkute were named Second Team All-Big Ten. It was Barnes’ second straight honor. Following the championship, Davis was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year, while Barnes was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year. It was Davis’ second straight honor and Barnes’ first.

Minnesota is idle next week, but returns to action when it competes at the Aramark South/Central Sprints in Knoxville, Tenn., May 17-18. The Gophers will compete in the regional and hope to be selected to their second-straight NCAA Championships, May 30-June 1.
