University of Minnesota senior Clayton Rask fired a 74 this afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State University. Rask stands in a tie for 24th place as an individual while junior Victor Almstrom shot a 77 and is in a tie for 77th.
The Gopher tandem are vying for a spot in the NCAA Championships. The top two individuals not among the 10 teams qualifying for NCAA Championships will receive individual berths in the NCAA Finals.
Rask started his round at the par 71, 7,420-yard Scarlet Course on the back nine. After a bogey on 10, Rask followed with consecutive birdies on 11 and 12 to get to 1-under. He slipped back to even with a bogey on 14 and finished the front nine with an even par 35. The Otsego, Minn. native birdied the par 4, 435-yard first hole to get back to 1-under but couldn't keep the momentum, recording three straight bogeys, eventually finishing with a 3-over 74.
Almstrom recorded his only birdie of the round on the par 4, 473-yard 14th hole but had a double bogey on the 15th en route to a 6-over 77.
Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow set the pace on the first day with a 2-under 69. The Demon Deacons also lead the team competition with a 6-over 290.
Rask and Almstrom are paired with Northern Iowa's Jordan Weber and will start the second round at 8:53 a.m. EST on the front nine. The 54-hole championship concludes on Saturday.
