Rowers Earn Academic Honors

The University of Minnesota rowing team earned academic acclaim this past week and were recognized by the Big Ten Conference and the Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association. In all, 17 student-athletes were honored for their academic achievement this past season.
Minnesota had 14 rowers on the Academic All-Big Ten team. In order to qualify for the Academic All-Big Ten team, student-athletes must be in their second year of competition at the institution, have a grade point average of above a 3.0 and be a letterwinner. Earning spots on the Academic All-Big Ten team were Stephanie Bakkum, Emily Baxter, Ali Fisher, Megan Flannery, Emily Johnson, Erica Niemiec, Chrsitine O'Donnell, Lisa Pugh, Jenna Schuder, Katie Simpson, Lauren VanProosdy, Jessica Veit, Ashlee Vilmo and Mary Ann Weinzierl.
The Gophers followed with eight on the CRCA Scholar Athlete awards. All student-athletes that were named to as CRCA Scholar Athletes had a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Fisher, Neimiec, Veit, Vilmo and Weinzierl were named to both as a Scholar Athlete and to the Academic All-Big Ten teams. Niemiec, who majors in classical civilazation and Latin, holds a GPA of 3.96. Weinzierl, the team captain, is majoring in microbiology and holds a GPA of 3.706. Also named as a CRCA Scholar Athlete were Christine Cira, Brenna Galvin and Michele Peterson.
