The Minnesota baseball team has signed Sam Ryan to a national letter of intent during the late signing period according to an announcement made by Minnesota head coach John Anderson on Tuesday, July 22. Ryan joins J.T. Canakees, Justin Gominsky, Troy Larson, Ethan Liederman, Austin Lubinsky, Matt Puhl, Sam Schissel and Kurt Schlagen as part of a class that is eligible to compete for Minnesota in 2009.
Ryan is a 6-3, 200 pound catcher/infielder out of Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minn. He was named First-Team All-State, All-Conference and All-Metro as a senior. Ryan also played in the Lions All-Star Game for the East team.
This past year, he helped lead Tartan to a Classic Suburban League Title, as his team went 14-2 in conference play and 19-5 overall. He batted .485 (32-for-66) with 34 runs, 25 RBI, eight doubles, two triples and nine home runs. Ryan also had 18 walks, finished with a team-best .600 on-base percentage and a 1.076 slugging percentage. Ryan was also drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
“We were extremely happy to add Sam (Ryan) to this year’s class after Nate Hanson signed with the Minnesota Twins organization,” said Minnesota Head Coach John Anderson. “Sam is an extremely athletic player who had a very good senior season. We feel he is a good fit for a our program, because he is a guy who can play different positions with the athleticism he possesses. He has a very good bat and above average speed, and we feel he should develop well as a player in our program.”
