Senior Mike Holmes (Eagan, Minn.) wrapped up Minnesota's competition at the United States Olympic Trials Saturday, finishing an impressive 15th in the 1500-meter freestyle at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. Holmes clocked a lifetime-best 15:31.92 in the event.

Holmes was just over seconds shy of the top eight that qualify for the finals on Sunday. Holmes was seeded 33rd entering the event and moved up 18 spots. He won the seventh of 10 heats out of lane eight and dropped almost six seconds off his career-best time that he set at the Canadian Olympic Trials in May. He carries dual citizenship with the United States and Canada. Junior Michael Daup also competed but was disqualified.

During the seven days of the Olympic Trials, Minnesota broke or tied four school long course records (David Plummer - 100 and 200-meter backstroke, Steve Miller - 50 freestyle and Alex Wold - 400 individual medley). Plummer advanced to the final of the 100 backstroke where he took seventh and took 16th in the 200 back. Jon Roberts reached the semifinals of the 100 and 200 breaststroke, placing 10th and 12th respectively.

The finals of the men's 1500-meter free and the women's 50 free will be contested on Sunday.
