1/8/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field

The Minnesota men’s and women’s track & field teams kick off their 2009 seasons by playing host to the Northwest Open at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 10. Competition begins at 12 noon with the pole vault and high jump. Events on the track get underway at 1:30 p.m.

The Gopher women, under the direction of third-year head coach Matt Bingle, return 25 letterwinners from the squad that won the 2008 Big Ten indoor title and posted the highest NCAA outdoor showing in school history when Minnesota tied for 13th. The Gophers will field an experienced team with four All-Americans Heather Dorniden, Jamie Cheever, Alicia Rue and Liz Roehrig leading the way. Roehrig only has an outdoor season of eligibility remaining.

The Gopher men’s team begins their first season under Steve Plasencia, just the fourth Minnesota head men’s track & field coach since 1937. Plasencia has a talented squad that features 30 returning letterwinners and five defending Big Ten champions Ibrahim Kabia (100m, outdoor), Hassan Mead (5,000m outdoor), Ben Peterson (pole vault, indoor), Chris Rombough (10,000m, outdoor) and Hans Storvick (800m, outdoor). Mead also earned All-America honors last season.
