Men's Swimming and Diving Names Captains

University of Minnesota head men's swimming and diving coach Dennis Dale announced captains today for the 2009-10 University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team. This year’s captains include seniors Ray Betuzzi, Tyler Jepsen, Mark Solfelt and Alex Wold.
Wold, a native of Wayzata, Minn., is a two-time All-American and the Minnesota school record holder in the 400 IM (3:42.61). He also ranks third on Minnesota’s all-time list in the 200 free and fourth in the 200 butterfly and in the 200 IM. Last season, Wold earned All-America honors in the 400 individual medley and the 800 freestyle relay, both of which broke school records. At last year’s Big Ten Championships, Wold finaled in all three of his individual events in the 200 fly and in the 200 and 400 IM. Wold also shattered the varsity long course school record in the 400 IM at the 2008 Olympic Trials with a time of 4:22.37 and took 14th place overall. He also had top 25 finished in the 200 fly and the 200 IM at the Trials.
Calgary, Alberta native Betuzzi is also a two-time All-American, earning his first All-American as a sophomore in the 500 free. Betuzzi earned his second All-American last season as a member of Minnesota’s 800 freestyle relay team that finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, swimming his leg in 1:33.64. He ranks second all-time on Minnesota’s all-time list in the 500 free (4:18.88), fifth in the 200 free (1:35.50) and sixth in the 1,650 free (15:13.88). At the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials, Betuzzi finished runner-up in the 400-meter free and fifth in the 100 free.
Diver Jepsen, a native of Downers Grove, Ill., qualified last year for the NCAA Zone C Championships where he finished 14th on the platform, 29th on the 1-meter and 30th on the 3-meter. He finished 27th on the 1-meter board, 28th on the 3-meter and 18th on the platform at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. Jepsen is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
An Eden Prairie native, Solfelt ranks 11th in the 200 IM (1:48.12), 15th in the 200 breast (2:00.06) and 20th in the 100 breast (55.79) on Minnesota’s all-time list. He is a former U.S. Junior National champion in the 200-meter IM. Solfelt has also competed at the Big Ten Championships every year of his Golden Gopher career.
The University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team will compete in the Intrasquad Meet Oct. 16 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The meet will start at 6 p.m. Minnesota opens its regular season in Madison, Wis. against Wisconsin on Oct. 30.
