Gophers Head to Chicago for Windon Invite

2009 WINDON INVITATIONAL: The Gophers travel this weekend to Chicago, Illinois for the 2009 Windon Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University. The invitational will be played at the 7081-yard, par 71 Skokie Country Club, which was established in 1897 and designed by Donald Ross. Skokie Country Club has served as host for the U.S. Open, Western Open, and Illinois Amateur in the past.

The Gophers have come away with the Windon Invite championship on three occasions (Co-champs in 1994, 1998 & 2003). The best individual finishes in the event for the Gophers were a couple of runner-ups from James McClean (1999) and Justin Smith (2003).

Participating Teams (w/ Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings): No. 1 Tennessee, No. 6 Illinois, No. 31 Kent State,  No. 32 Michigan, No. 35 Indiana, No. 36 California, No. 38 Northwestern, No. 39 Coastal Carolina, No. 45 Tulsa,  No. 46 Minnesota, No. 66 Eastern Michigan,  No. 71 UC Davis,  No. 73 Old Dominion,  No. 76 Purdue  and  No. 170 Northern Illinois.

The players will start with 36 holes on Sunday and finish the invitational with 18 holes on Monday. Live stats and results will be available at www.golfstat.com.

2009 WOLVERINE AT RADRICK FARMS:  The Golden Gophers shot a steady even-par 288 on the final day to finish the tournament at three-over 867 and in fifth place out of the 14 team field. The host Michigan Wolverines won the event.

Leading the Gophers was senior Ben Pisani, who shot a six-under 210 to finish in a tie for seventh place. Pisani started the weekend with rounds of 69 and 71, and finished the tournament Sunday with a 2-under 70. Jamie Mitchell of Arkansas shot a final round 65 to take the tournament by one stroke over 36-hole leader Lion Kim of Michigan.

Senior Thomas Campbell finished at 1-over 217 for a tie for 17th. The Gophers counted all three of Campbell's rounds of 73-72-72. Freshman Frederick Van Rooyen followed up his strong start at the 2009 Gopher Invitational and carded rounds of 74-74-72 to finish at 4-over 220 and a tie for 26th place. Sophomore Derek Chang was one stroke back of Van Rooyen at the end of the weekend and finished in a tie for 28th place. Redshirt freshman David Haley Jr. rounded off the Gopher lineup in a tie for 56th at 227.

THE GOPHERS: Minnesota lineup stalwarts Ben Pisani, Thomas Campbell and Derek Chang will be joined this weekend by junior Cameron White and freshman Frederick Van Rooyen. Fellow freshman Shang Zhi will be playing the invite as an individual.

UP NEXT:  The Gophers travel to Fairfax, California for the Alistar MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the University of California-Berkeley. The invitational will be played on Monday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 13 at The Meadow Club, the first course in the United States designed by Dr. Alistar MacKenzie.
