Gophers Start Season at Alumni Meet

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team began its 2009-10 campaign with the annual Alumni Meet at the University Aquatic Center this evening. Kelci Bryant, Melissa Nelson, Meagan Radecke, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Annalise Colton posted individual victories for the Golden Gophers.
In the 50 breaststroke, junior Jillian Tyler posted a winning time of 28.70 while junior Meagan Radecke took first in the 50 freestyle in 24.38
Junior Kaylee Jamison timed an 11.18 to cruise to an easy victory in the 25 free, defeating a 21-swimmer field. Freshman Abigail Staats finished second in 11.27. Sophomore Melissa Nelson also took home a victory, winning the 100 backstroke in 59.03.
University of Miami transfer Kelci Bryant started her Gopher career with a win in 1-meter diving with a score of 287.45. Freshman Annalise Colton took the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.04.
Former Gophers Rox Akradi and Kate Hardt both posted big nights at the Alumni Meet. In the 200 medley relay, Akradi lead off and Hardt anchored Minnesota A to take first with a time of 1:40.74. Hardt won two other events, taking first in the 100 breast in 58.81 and in the 50 butterfly in 24.32. Akradi also took first place in two events, winning the 100 free in 49.29 and the 50 back in 25.63.
The Gophers continue competition on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. with the Intrasquad Meet. Minnesota opens the regular season on Oct. 30 against Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.
