Gophers Start Fall Season with a Pair of Wins

The University of Minnesota rowing team opened the 2009-10 season competing in the Head of the Mississippi, hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club. The Golden Gophers won both of its varsity events, while the novice group finished third and fifth overall in its event.

The Gophers had four boats in both the Women’s Collegiate 4+ and Women’s Collegiate 8+ competitions. The Collegiate 4+ event started approximately at 9:40 a.m. with the Gophers holding four boats in the event. Minnesota’s A boat of Jenna Schuder, Lucy Mulvey, Cassie Drozynski, Erika Berg and coxswain Adriana Gutierrez, won the event in a time of :20.18. Although they won the event, it wasn’t without troubles, considering the fin came off during the race. Minnesota’s D boat of Maddy Bourgeois at stroke, Leah Rogotzke, Elyse Weir, Alli Fast and coxswain Ilana Ostrin came in second in a time of :20.57. Coxswain Sara Baldvins, Kristin Anderson, Quinn Anderson, Laura Salzman and Caitlin Boon at bow finished fourth overall in :22.13. In fifth-place overall was Brenna Galvin, Nicolle Fisher, Mikaela Rogers, Madeline Etrheim and coxswain Stephanie Shodis held a time of :22.19.

The women’s freshman/novice college 8+ competed at 11 a.m. with the Gophers placing third and fifth overall. Minnesota’s A boat of coxswain Alicia Gruenwald, Victoria Vass, JoAnne Pohl, Kayla Thom, Natalie Reker, Jennifer VanVliet, Alyssa Trelstad, Tawnnie Lasee and Andrea Beczkiewicz at bow held a time of :23.36 for third. Minnesota’s B boat of coxswain Alexandra Basalo, Allison Putlak, Theresa Mozinski, Elizabeth Saindon, Ali Haws, Alexandria Voss, Katherina Busch, Meagan Bown and Katie Anderson at bow placed fifth in :24.31.

The Gophers’ final competition of the game came at the collegiate 8+ race at 2:40 p.m. Minnesota’s A boat of Schuder at stroke, Mulvey, Drozynski, Berg, Merth, Rebekah Brzozowski, Rachel Sartor, Michele Peterson at bow and coxswain Ilana Ostrin won it in :17.27. Following the A boat was Minnesota B in second with a time of :18.00. The Minnesota B contained coxswain Stephanie Shodis, Debbie Brzozowski at stroke. Christine Beauparlant, Kathryn Switalski, Sarah Krueger, Alyssa Kast, Katelyn Nichols, Shannon Gates, Becky Kinchen at bow. Minnesota C came in fourth overall (:18.41), which contained Teresa Logemann at stroke, Weir, Kate Ladell, Christine Cira, Fast, Bourgeois, Megan Lenarz, Grace Lorig, and coxswain Baldvins. Minnesota D of Boon, Rogotzke, Quinn Anderson, Kristin Anderson, Galvin, Fisher, Etrheim, Salzman and Gutierrez finished fifth in :19.21.

Minnesota’s next competition will be on Oct. 25th. The team will compete in two events that day with the top boats going to the Princeton Chase, while the rest of the Gophers will compete at the Head of the Iowa.
