11/12/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving

After two weeks of competing on the road, the University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team will come home Friday to the University Aquatic Center to host nationally talented swimmers from around the country at the USA Swimming Minnesota Grand Prix from Friday to Sunday.

Among some of the swimmers from across the country who will compete at the meet are Tyler Clary of the University of Michigan, Michael Klueh, Daniel Madwed of the University of Michigan, Mike Alexandrov and Simon Burnett.

Clary was a silver medalist at the World Championships for Team USA, while his Michigan teammate Madwed also competed at the World Championships for Team USA. Klueh is another member of the U.S. National Team and will compete against Clary and Madwed in the 200 freestyle. Alexandrov was a former NCAA champion at Northwestern and was also an Olympian for Bulgaria. Burnett is another NCAA champion at Arizona and was an Olympian for Great Britain.

Last year at the Minnesota Grand Prix, five Gophers finished with individual titles. Former Gopher Mike Holmes won the 1650 freestyle (15:24.02), junior Nadav Kochavi the 200 butterfly (1:46.12) and senior Ray Betuzzi the 500 free (4:26.66). Minnesota also had success in the diving events with junior Drew Brown winning the 3-meter diving event with a school shattering record of 395.70. Brown also won the platform diving event (335.70). Former Minnesota diver Cole Young took another diving event, winning the 1-meter with a score of 322.95.

After starting the dual season 2-0, the Golden Gophers look to continue their success after beating Iowa last week 184-114. In both duals this season, senior Alex Wold, junior Ivan Gutesa and sophomore Karl Burdis all had two individual title victories.

The Grand Prix begins its second season in existence this weekend. Prelims will start at 9 a.m. each day with the finals at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evening. Sunday’s finals will start at 5 p.m. Live results for the meet can be found on www.gophersports.com.

SPECTATOR TRAVEL ADVISORY
Travel to Saturday’s competition will be impacted due to a University of Minnesota Football game against South Dakota State that afternoon. This will severely impact traffic on campus and no parking will be available for the Prelims session on Saturday. There are several options for transportation however.
