Intrasquad Scrimmage Slated for Friday

A sneak peek at the eighth-ranked University of Minnesota men's gymnastics squad is on tap Friday afternoon at Cooke Hall. The Gophers will host their first of two Maroon and Gold Intrasquad scrimmages at 4 p.m.

Minnesota head coach Mike Burns said the intrasquad scrimmages are one of the team's best chances to simulate a competition. He's looking forward to seeing which of his student-athletes rise to the challenge.

"This will be our first chance to see the team in a mock competitive situation," Burns said. "I'm really excited to see who steps up and shows great leadership through great performances. We will be utilizing these two opportunities to start finalizing our competition lineup."

Burns said the team looks forward to these scrimmages as a sign that the regular season is right around the corner.

"The fall training period has been hard and I know I'm ready to get the competition season under way," he said. "These Maroon and Gold intrasquads are a great way to transition into our season, which gets started Jan. 16 at the Windy City Invitational down in Chicago."

Cooke Hall is located across the street from Williams Arena and directly across the sidewalk from the University Recreation Center. It can be a bit of a trick accessing the team's gym, as spectators will need to enter through the Rec Center and go across the third-floor skyway to get there.

"We are tucked away on the third floor of Cooke Hall, down at the south end," Burns said. "So for those who want to get a preview of the 2010 Gopher Men's Gymnastics Team in action prior to the season, this is a great chance to see us. Our guys always enjoy an audience. So come on by and watch them in action."
