The No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team scored three power-play goals, including two from Megan Bozek to earn a 3-1 win over North Dakota, today in Grand Forks, N.D. With the win, the Gophers improve to 14-3-2 overall and 10-2-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Golden Gophers got on the board at 11:28 in the first period as Anne Schleper scored her seventh goal of the season and fifth goal during the power play to take an early 1-0 lead. Brittany Francis started the play passing the puck to West, who was streaking in through the slot and put a shot on goal. West's shot was batted in by Schleper who was waiting at the back door.
After the two teams went scoreless in the second, Minnesota found the back of the net again on the power play when Bozek one-timed the puck for her second goal of the season at 1:53 in the third. Emily West started the power-play goal by passing the puck to Schleper, who was at the right point. She found an open Bozek, who fired a shot. The puck was re-directed in front of the goalmouth and found its way to the back of the net.
UND responded with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 3:57 in the third period to cut the Gophers' lead back to one. North Dakota's Stephanie Roy placed the puck on the short side of Noora Räty to put the game at 2-1. The two shots during the 5-on-3 would be all that Minnesota allowed in the third period.
The Gophers, however, put the game back to a two-goal lead when Bozek scored her second goal of the game at 17:23 in the third for the 3-1 final. Bozek shot the puck just inside the blue line and placed it on the blocker side of UND goalie Jorid Dagfinrud. Sarah Erickson and Brittany Francis each assisted on the play.
The Gopher defense allowed only six shots on goal during the game, a season low. UND had two shots in the first, second and third for six. Minnesota had nine in the first, 12 in the second and 14 in the third for 35 shots. With the three power-play goals, Minnesota went 3-for-7 on the power play, while holding UND to one 5-on-3 power-play goal in four attempts.
Minnesota battles North Dakota again tomorrow at 2:07 p.m.
