Two University of Minnesota freshmen earned Big Ten All-Freshman team honors from The Sporting News, as announced by the magazine on Wednesday.
Defensive lineman D.L. Wilhite and wide receiver/punt returner Bryant Allen were honored. Allen was listed as a punt returner.
Wilhite had two sacks and two tackles for loss in the regular season. He also recovered two fumbles and forced another. His sack, strip and fumble recovery put the icing on a victory over Northwestern earlier this season. Wilhite scored Minnesota's only touchdown in a 16-13 win over South Dakota State, when he recovered a ball that popped into the air after a Michael Carter sack and returned it three yards for a score.
Allen returned six punts for 73 yards, averaging 12.2 per return. He had a long punt return of 31 yards. In addition to his return duties, Allen caught five passes for 45 yards in the 2009 regular season.
Wilhite, Allen and their teammates are currently preparing for the Insight Bowl, which is slated for Dec. 31. Minnesota will face off with Iowa State in Tempe, Ariz. in a 4 p.m. (MST) contest.
