Gophers Fall at Purdue

12/28/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Despite a career-high 17 point performance by China Antoine, Minnesota suffered a 51-43 loss at Purdue on Monday. The Golden Gophers fall to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.

The Gophers started the game ice-cold on offense, missing their first nine field goal attempts and turning the ball over nine times. Even with that disasterous start, Minnesota found itself down just 10-3, when Antoine finally broke the lid off the basket with a jumper from the right wing with 9:35 left in the first half.

After Katie Loberg’s lay-in cut the Purdue lead to 11 points at 24-13, the Gophers had three chances to bring the deficit to single digits in the closing seconds of the half. All three shots drew iron and bounced away.

The Gophers made a game of it early in the second half. A three-pointer by Jackie Voigt at the 13:47 mark brought the score to 29-25, as close as Minnesota would get. Purdue answered with a pair of field goals, before Antoine hit her third three-pointer of the game at the 12:34 mark. The score was 33-28 at the time.

Offensive slump number-two of the game was as costly as the game’s opening one. The Gophers went over seven minutes without scoring and Purdue took advantage going on an 11-0 run to take control of the game.

Minnesota chipped away at the Purdue lead, taking it down to seven on a Kiara Buford jumper with 1:32 left to play. The Boilermakers iced the game with free throws down the stretch.

The Gophers next game is Sunday, Jan. 3 at home versus Iowa. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
