Gophers Continue to Lead After Second Day of Invite

On the second day of competition at the Ohio State Invitational, the 12th-ranked University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team continued its success by winning seven of eight events at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The Golden Gophers started the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The Minnesota A squad made up of sophomore Hannah Whitehead, junior Jillian Tyler, junior Kaylee Jamison and junior Alison Eggers swam an NCAA-B qualifying time of 1:40.23 to give Minnesota its first of seven victories.
Minnesota also took first in the 800 freestyle relay with the B-qualifying time of 7:15.88. The Minnesota A team was comprised of Ashley Steenvoorden, Lauren Weis, Kristen Steenvoorden and Marissa Davies.
In the 400 individual medley, Kristen Steenvoorden swam an NCAA-B qualifying time of 4:17.71 to take first place. Freshman Elizabeth Weitz took seventh (4:24.05), while fellow freshman Haley Spencer took ninth (4:20.73). Also finishing in the top-16 was Paige Bradley in 11th (4:23.53) and Katie Johnson in 15th (4:26.37).
The Gophers finished 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly with Kaylee Jamison winning the event in the B-qualifying time of 53.98. Following behind Jamison were Molly Belk (54.90) and Megan Braun (55.30). Three other Gophers finishing in the top-10 were Kelsey Ridder in fifth (55.45), Annalise Colton in sixth (55.55) and Melissa Nelson in ninth (56.00).
Following up a win in the 200 IM yesterday, Jillian Tyler took first place in the 100 breaststroke. The Team Canada swimmer swam the event in 1:00.58, while teammate Haley Spencer came in second (1:01.53). Both swimmers earned NCAA-B qualifying times. Not too far behind was freshman Emma Jackson in fourth (1:03.56), junior Molly Belk in sixth (1:03.95) and Jamison in 13th (1:05.26).
Minnesota also finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with Hannah Whitehead winning the event in a time of 55.13. Castina Wabeke came in second in 55.23, which earned both swimmers B-qualifying times. Also finishing in the top-16 was Andrea Hanson in 11th (57.22) and Melissa Nelson in 12th (57.24).
After winning the 1-meter diving event yesterday, sophomore Kelci Bryant won the 3-meter today with a score of 370.40.
In the 200 free, Marissa Davies took second in 1:48.30 and both Ashley Steenvoorden and Lauren Weis tied for third in 1:48.34. All three of them earned NCAA-B qualifying times, Finishing behind the trio was Loren Brandon in 12th (1:51.41) and Lissa Tommerdahl in 13th (1:52.35).
