Gophers Win OSU Invite in Dominating Fashion

After a three-day competition at the Ohio State Invitational, the No. 12 University of Minnesota won the invite in dominating fashion with a score of 1174 points. The Golden Gophers concluded the meet today and won three of five events contested to close out with a win. Second place finisher and host, Ohio State, had 845 points, while West Virginia was third with 529.5.
The Golden Gophers started the third day with the 1650 free event, earning the top four spots and accumulating 68 points. Ashley Steenvoorden earned a provisional qualifying time of 16:16.21, while Loren Brandon followed in second with a provisional time of 16:21.09. Lissa Tommerdahl added a provisional time of 16:27.31, while Kristen Steenvoorden chipped in a provisional time of 16:32.83 and fourth place.
Jillian Tyler collected the Gophers’ second event win of the day when she won the 200 breaststroke in a provisional time of 2:10.54. She shaved off three seconds from her prelim time of 2:13.92 to win the event. Teammate Haley Spencer followed behind Tyler in second when she added a provisional time of 2:11.09. Emma Jackson finished fourth overall in 2:17.88, while Paige Bradley also competed in the event for seventh (2:19.31).
Minnesota had five finish in the top eight in the 200 fly. Molly Belk won the event in a provisional qualifying time of 1:59.62 as Kaylee Jamison took second in a provisional time of 2:00.48. Annalise Colton was fourth in 2:00.94 and Elizabeth Weitz was seventh in 2:03.97. Kelsey Ridder rounded out the Gopher championship final in eighth in 2:04.23.
Castina Wabeke and Andrea Hanson led the Gophers in the 200 back, both of which competed in the championship final. Wabeke had a time of 2:01.33 in sixth, followed by Hanson in seventh (2:02.25). Hannah Whitehead won the consolation final in 2:01.08.
Marissa Davies led the Gopher contingent in the 100 free, finishing third overall (50.68), while Lauren Weis was seventh (51.63) and Alison Eggers was eighth (52.71).
