The Gopher men's gymnastics team is looking forward to a strong season on the floor exercise. Returning nearly every one of their top performers from last season excites Head coach Mike Burns.
"I think we'll be really strong this year," Burns said. "Our top four guys can put up some good scores, and we have a lot of strength in our senior class to bring home the bacon."
Minnesota has eight senior leaders this year, all of whom were strong competitors in the floor event last season.
Senior Colin McGuire is returning to the Gopher gymnastics team with high hopes for the season. McGuire competed in every meet last season and is a very strong competitor for the Gophers.
"I have high aspirations for myself," McGuire said. "We have developed a (floor) set for me that is strong, and that is capable for me to hit, and stick my landings."
Coach Burns also has high expectations for the floor event this year and feels it will be a strength of the team as he looks forward to beginning the season.
"I think we're going to do great this year," Burns said. "I'm really looking forward to the first competition of the year at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, which is always our break out event."
At the Windy City Invitational, the Gophers will end the meet on the floor exercise, which is also how they will end the meet at the Big Ten Championships at the end of the season. Burns believes finishing with such a strong event for the Gophers will be an advantage for them.
Minnesota is going into the season with some lofty goals for the floor exercise. But the Gophers are looking forward to the challenges they will face in 2010.
"I think it would be great if we got three or four guys into the Big Ten finals and NCAA event finals," Burns said.
