The University of Minnesota men's golf team lost twice Friday at the inaugural Big Ten Match Play at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. The Gophers will take on Ohio State on Saturday in the finale for both teams.
Minnesota, the seventh seed in the event, faced eighth seeded Purdue in the opening round on Friday morning. The Gophers fell to the Boilermakers by a score of 5 matches to 1. Junior Ben Pisani collected the Gophers lone point with a 2-up win over Boom Ratankul.
The Gophers were matched up with Penn State in the second round and the Nittany Lions proved too strong with a 4-2 victory. Senior Victor Almstrom picked up a point with a 1-up victory over Nick Archambeault. Pisani and freshman Derek Chang scored the other points for Minnesota by halving their matches.
The Gophers will be off for two weeks until traveling to Rio Mar, Puerto Rico to take part in the NCAA Shootout. The event is scheduled for Feb. 27-March 1 and will be played at Rio Mar Country Club.
