Gophers in 13th after First Round in Puerto Rico

The University of Minnesota men's golf team combined to score an 8-over par 296 and are in 13th place after day one of the NCAA Shootout at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
The Gophers were led by senior Victor Almstrom and freshman Derek Chang, who both carded rounds of 1-over par 73 and are tied for 32nd place. Junior Ben Pisani is a shot behind his teammates after a round of 2-over par 74 and is in a tie for 42nd place. Senior Yu Katayama shot a 76 and is in a tie for 56th while junior Thomas Campbell is in a tie for 71st after an opening round 80.
Georgia Tech holds a one-shot lead over North Carolina State after opening with an 8-under 280. Georgia (-5, 283), Clemson (-3, 285) and Oklahoma State (-2, 286) round out the top five. Individually, North Carolina's Darren Blair and Dylan Fritelli of Texas put together mirrored rounds of 33-34 (5-under 67) and are tied for medalist honors after 18 holes.
Round two is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 a.m. Central.
