Gophers in a tie for Ninth in Puerto Rico

The University of Minnesota women’s golf team has officially begun the spring portion of its 2008-09 season after shooting a 26-over 314 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Shootout at Coco Beach Golf Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Gophers are in a three-way tie for third place with Iowa State and Michigan.

Leading the way in round one for the Gophers was true freshman Courtney Massey, who carded a 4-over par 76 (37-39) and is in a tie for 15th place individually. Massey, a native of Australia, joined the team at the beginning of the spring semester and his making her collegiate debut.

Sophomore Teresa Puga is two shots behind Massey following a 6-over par 78 (38-40) in round one. Puga is coming off a fall season that saw her record the lowest fall season scoring average in school history at 74.07.  Fellow sophomores Mary Narzisi and Michele Edlin round out the Gopher scoring on day one with scores of 79 (39-40) and 81 (37-44), respectively.  Senior Kelli Berns is playing the shootout as an individual and is in a tie for 47th place after a round of 80 (44-36)

The University of Georgia and TCU are tied for the team lead with combined scores of 14-over par (302). Purdue (+16, 304), Florida State (+17, 305) and Kent State (+20, 308) round out the top five.  Kendall Dye of Oklahoma and TCU’s Valentine Derrey are tied for the individual lead at even par.

Tee times for the second round of the Puerto Rico Shootout are scheduled for 7:00 a.m. Central.
