The 25th-ranked Minnesota baseball team (10-4) dropped the series finale to No. 14 TCU (11-4) 4-1 at Lupton Stadium on Monday, Mar. 16.

Minnesota was led offensively by junior Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) who reached base four times, and was 3-for-3 on the night. Redshirt freshman Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) accounted for the only Golden Gopher run on the night as he hit his first career home run in the second inning, and went 1-for-4. Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 19 games dating back to 2008. Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) also reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

The Golden Gophers had an early threat when Nohelty walked and stole second to lead off the game in the top of the first. However, Nohelty was picked off for the first out of the inning. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) drew a walk and moved to second on a single by McCallum. Kvasnicka followed with a single to right field, but Geason was cut down at the plate on a nice cutoff throw from the TCU first baseman that came on a relay throw by the rightfielder.

Minnesota took an early 1-0 lead when O'Shea crushed a home run to left center field with one out in the top of the second inning.

TCU answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to move ahead 2-1. Matt Vern got the scoring started with a solo home run to left field to make it 1-1. Corey Steglich followed with a triple to right center field, and came around to score on a close play at the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ben Carruthers to give the Horned Frogs their first lead of the night.

The Horned Frogs scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead when Bryan Holaday singled home Matt Curry to make it a two-run TCU lead.

TCU scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning to add an insurance run to go up 4-1. Carruthers led off with a double, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Carpenter. Chris Ellington walked intentionally to make it first and third. With one out, Ellington took off for second drawing a throw that allowed Carruthers to steal home for the final run of the game.

Minnesota sophomore Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) took a tough-luck loss, as he gave up six hits and three runs in 6.2 innings of work. Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) pitched one scoreless inning of relief and struck out two batters. Tim Ryan (Eagan, Minn.) got the Gophers out of a jam in the seventh inning, but gave up the leadoff double by Carruthers and was charged with the run in one third on an inning.

TCU starter Kyle Winkler got the win, as he went eight innings, gave up six hits, one run, walked three and struck out 10. Trent Appleby picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Horned Frogs were led by Vern who reached base three times, and was 1-for-1 with a home run. Carruthers also went 1-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI.

Minnesota will be back in action when it faces Texas-Arlington at QuikTrip Stadium on Tuesday, Mar. 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also face the Mavericks at their on-campus facility on Wednesday, Mar. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
