Get to Know the Rowers: Steph Bakkum

The first thought I had when joining the rowing program was:
I’m going to gain so much muscle!

The most challenging thing I’ve had to do in college so far is:
Learning how to balance my rowing life with my non rowing life and finding they are really all one in the same, it just takes time to figure out the right balance.

My most memorable sports experience was:
This fall competing with some of the best crews in the country at the Princeton Chase.  We performed well and our finish set us up to train aggressively all winter, knowing what competition we would face this spring.  Sitting now in March, we have risen to the challenge and I look forward to racing those crews again.

What advice would you give to younger student-athletes?
Ask questions early....and utilize all the resources the University of Minnesota has to offer, inside and outside the athletic department.

If you were to compete in a different sport at the U, what would it be and why?
Track and Field...high jump!! I was in track for 5 years and loved the high jump more than anything!

What has been your funniest road trip memory so far?
By far the funniest road trip memory was the tornado that struck Bloomington Indiana at the double duel novice year. I made Erika, Ashlee and Lisa get out of bed and SPRINT outside in the pouring rain, while the city tornado signal sounded.  We ended up in the hotel lobby @ 2am wearing only our sleeping attire.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could bring three things, what would it be?
A water cooler that could double as a flotation raft when empty, Volleyball, Large pair of Jackie O shades

My teammates would describe me as:
They say I’m always motivated.  Whether in weights or on the water I try to improve everyday.  I’m also supremely entertaining.

How many songs do you have in your iPod?:
1,259

Favorite meal:
Ice cream, yes that would be the meal.
