Stoa and Bostrom Each Collect Three Team Awards

Junior Ryan Stoa and senior Justin Bostrom each received three individual awards in highlighting the Minnesota men’s hockey team’s annual award banquet. The awards are voted upon by the team members and were presented at the annual banquet on Sunday, March 29 at Jax Caf in Minneapolis.

Stoa, the team’s captain, was the John Mariucci team Most Valuable Player and also received the Elwin “Doc” Romnes Leadership and Sportsmanship Award and the Tom Mohr Playoff MVP honor.

Bostrom, an assistant captain, collected the Mike Crupi Most Determined Player Award and Donald M. Clark Community Service Award. Bostrom also shared the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award with junior Tony Lucia. Freshman Jordan Schroeder was named the Frank Pond Rookie of the Year and junior Brian Schack earned the John Mayasich Outstanding Student-Athlete Award.

Stoa, a Bloomington, Minn. native, was the Western Collegiate Hockey Association scoring champion and earned first-team All-League honors. He led the Gophers in most offensive categories with 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points and a plus-17 rating. In addition to leading the league with 36 points in conference games, he also was the WCHA’s top goal-scorer with 19 goals in league contests.

Stoa was named a first-team All-American by College Hockey News and has signed a contract to join the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League for the 2009-10 season. He ranked sixth nationally with 1.28 points per game and third in the country in goals per game with 24 goals in 36 games. Stoa was named the WCHA Player of the Month for November with 12 points in nine games.

Bostrom, a Vadnais Heights, Minn. native, was one of four players to appear in every game. He was one of the team’s top penalty killers and finished the season with five goals and four assists for nine points. He concluded his career with 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 points in 148 career games. Bostrom has been selected to participate in the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge on April 10 in Washington, D.C.

Lucia, a Plymouth, Minn. native, compiled nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in 34 games this season. He scored his nine goals over nine different games and the team finished 10-4-1 when he scored a point. Lucia finished the regular season on a strong note with goals in each of the team’s last three games.

Schroeder, a Prior Lake, Minn. native, was the WCHA Rookie of the Year and the College Hockey News National Rookie of the Year award winner. A second-team All-WCHA pick, he ranked fourth in the nation in scoring at 1.30 points per game with 13 goals and 32 assists for 45 points in 35 games and had points in the final eight games of the year. He was the National Rookie of the Month for November and was the only freshman among the nation’s top 50 scorers.

Schack, a Lino Lakes, Minn. native, played in 14 games this season and owns a 3.20 cumulative grade point average in Business and Marketing Education.
