Throughout the spring season, gophersports.com will periodically feature rowing student-athletes in a question and answer session. The third Q & A session is with sophomore Kate Ladell.

The first thought I had when joining the rowing program was:
This is going to be a lot different from high school rowing. I was intimated by the varsity team.

The most challenging thing I’ve had to do in college so far is:
Accepting that not every practice is going to go my way and that I have something new to learn everyday.

My most memorable sports experience was:
My most memorable sports experience was watching my teammates novice year go from not knowing anything about rowing to placing third at Big Tens. Those girls showed me what hard work was and then final at Big Tens really proved to me how much determination and hard work pay off in the end.

What advice would you give to younger student-athletes?
Remember every race or game because those are the memories that you want to hold on to. Perform your best everyday, even if it’s just practice.

If you were to compete in a different sport at the U, what would it be and why?
I think it would be awesome to be able to do gymnastics. Every time I watch a meet, I am so impressed that they can do flips on the balance beam and swing on the uneven bars.

What has been your funniest road trip memory so far?
My funniest road trip memory would have to be making the novice dance on spring training in 2008. I laughed through the whole thing, I am surprised we finished.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could bring three things, what would it be?

A picture of my family and friends, a really long book, and a case of water.

My teammates would describe me as:

Determined

If I could trade places with anyone for one day, who would it be and why?

I would want to trade places with my friend in Germany. I really loved her town and I would love to go back, even if my German is below par.

Something that most people wouldn’t have known about me is:
The only reason I started rowing was because I didn’t make the cut for the volleyball team.

How many songs do you have in your iPod?:
Almost 8 gigabits, I have 1991 songs in my itunes.

Favorite meal:
Steak and mashed potatoes.
