The University of Minnesota rowing team competed at the Big Ten Double Duals, today in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Gophers competed against Brown, Indiana and Notre Dame. Also competing in the event was host institution Ohio State, who also faced Brown, Indiana and Notre Dame.
Minnesota’s First Varsity Eight, ranked No. 18 in the polls, earned a win over Indiana in a time of 6:36.09. The Gopher boat of Lisa Pugh, Katherine Johnson, Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham, Cassie Drozynski and coxswain Erica Niemiec earned a six-second win over the Hoosiers when they crossed the line in 6:42.20. In the afternoon session, the Gophers finished less than four seconds behind No. 8 Brown and ahead of Notre Dame. Brown finished the race in a time of 6:22.00, followed by Minnesota in second (6:25.91) and Notre Dame in third (6:27.33).
“Our race against Brown and Notre Dame was such an exciting race,” assistant coach Wendy Wisehart said. “Heading into the first 1,000 meters, we were down, but coming into the third 500, we really started to make our move. I think we did a good job of pressing them. The 1V was really relaxed and stayed composed and finished the race strong. With only seven hours of water time since Tennessee, we were impressed with our outcome.“ Head coach Wendy Davis sustained an injury earlier in the week, and did not travel to Double Duals. Assistant coaches Wisehart and John Flynn, along with graduate assistant Becca Carlton assisted the varsity program.
