Gophers in Fourth at Robert Kepler Intercollegiate

The University of Minnesota men’s golf team is a couple of weeks away from the Big Ten Championships. The task at hand this weekend, however, is the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, which is the team’s final regular-season tune-up before the championships.
Through two rounds in Columbus, Ohio, Minnesota is in fourth place with a 36-hole score of 604 (305-299). Northwestern leads the tournament, followed by Kent State and East Tennessee State.
The Gophers have a pair of players that are in the top-10 individually, led by freshman Derek Chang in a tie for seventh. Chang struggled in the morning session, finishing with a 6-over par 77 but rebounded in the afternoon to shoot an even-par 71. He is tied with Iowa’s Vince India at 148 heading into Sunday’s final round.
Junior Ben Pisani, the Gophers’ team leader in stroke average, is tied for ninth place with four other golfers at 7-over par 149. He, like his teammate Chang, stumbled in the morning with a 78 but also rebounded with an even-par round of 71 in the afternoon.
Junior Thomas Campbell, along with senior Victor Almstrom, paced the Gophers in the morning, each posting a 75. Campbell carded a 78 in the afternoon and Almstrom managed a 79 to finish the day in 27th and tied for 28th, respectively. Senior Patrick Datz, playing in only his third tournament of the year, posted scores of 78 and 81 and is in a tie for 51st.
Sunday’s third and final round at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The entire round can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.
