The University of Minnesota rowing team competed in the final day of the two-day Lake Natoma Invitational, held at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. Minn.
After holding all of the teams in the standings from yesterday’s competition, the nine teams competing broke into three separate groups, based off their Saturday performance. California, Stanford and Wisconsin were in the first group, while Minnesota competed against Tennessee and UCLA in the second group, and Texas, Sacramento State and Central Florida were in the third group. Although the Gophers and UCLA tied for first in their group, the Bruins earned the tie-breaker based off their first-place finish in the First Varsity Eight competition. Minnesota, however, was the most consistent of the three teams in the group, winning two of the three events over the Bruins and the Lady Vols.
Minnesota started the day in dominating fashion, winning the Varsity Four race and gained six points in group standings. The Gopher boat of coxswain Monika Folker, Teresa Logemann, Tracy Merth, Kate Ladell and Christine Cira won the event in a time of 7:31.06. UCLA was second in the event more than 11 seconds after the Gopher boat in 7:42.76. Tennessee was third in 8:03.28.
The Gophers then finished second in the Second Varsity Eight. Tennessee won the race in a time of 6:46.90, while Minnesota was second in 6:53.08 and UCLA was third in 6:59.81. Minnesota’s 2V8 consisted of coxswain Ilana Ostrin, Michele Peterson, Emily Baxter, Allison Fisher, Erin Desmond, Rebekah Brzozowski, Tina Cho, Sarah Krueger and Molly Kalmoe.
Minnesota’s First Varsity ranked, ranked 20th in the country, finished second behind No. 19 UCLA, followed by Tennessee in third. The Bruins won the race in a time of 6:33.90, followed by Minnesota in 6:36.41. Although the Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the first 500 meters, Minnesota battled back in the remaining 1,500 meters, but couldn’t close the gap that UCLA created in the first 500 meters. Minnesota’s boat contained coxswain Erica Niemiec, Lisa Pugh at stroke, Katherine Johnson, Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham and Cassie Drozynski at bow.
Minnesota hosts its only home race of the spring season next weekend at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn. Time is set for 10 a.m., but fans are encouraged to check back to gophersports.com the day before the race as the time is subject to change due to weather and wind conditions.
