Gophers Win Seven Races Over Kansas

The University of Minnesota rowing team won seven of eight races against Kansas University, today, at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn. The Golden Gophers used the race against the Jayhawks as a final tune-up for the Big Ten Championships next Saturday.

Minnesota opened the racing with a second-place finish in the Fourth Varsity Four race. Kansas earned a three-seat win over the Gophers as the Jayhawks earned the win in a time of 7:49.0. Minnesota’s boat of coxswain Kate Stadum, Kristin Haag, Brenna Galvin, Mikaela Rogers, Nicolle Fisher at bow crossed the line in 7:50.4, while Kansas’ second boat in the race held a time of 8:20.9.

Minnesota earned its first win of the day in the Third Varsity Four with two seats of open water on Kansas. The Golden Gophers boat of coxswain Dana Landseidel, Debbie Brzozowski at stroke, Krystal Arbery, Shannon Gates, Katelyn Nichols won their race in a time of 7:40.1 to Kansas’ time of 7:44.6.

The Gophers added an exciting one-two bunch in the Second Novice Eight race. With the last 250 meters, Minnesota’s B boat of Coxswain Adrianna Gutierrez, Maddy Etrheim, Lindsey Partridge, Maddy Bourgeois, Hannah Okray, Sarah McKenzie, Aileen Flynn, Amanda Turnwall, Kari Eloranta sprinted to the finish win for the win. The Gophers’ B boat finished in 7:08.0, while the Gophers’ A boat held a time of 7:10.7. In the Gophers’ A boat was coxswain Beth Kregel, Laura Salzman, Tori Lund, Liz Farmer, Leah Rogotzke, Yasmin Khan, Natasha Sulaeman, Tasha Randall, Brittany Storoz at bow.

Minnesota cruised to an easy win in the First Novice Eight action. Minnesota held the lead from start to finish and clocked a time of 6:45.6 to the Jayhawks’ time of 7:18.0. In the Gophers’ 1N8 was coxswain Sara Baldvins, Quinn Anderson, Courtney Podritz, Caitlin Boon, Erika Berg, Allison Fast, Emma Porter, Kristin Anderson and Grace Lorig at bow.

Minnesota’s First and Second Varsity Fours dominated its races, winning both. Minnesota’s Second Varsity Four of coxswain Linnea Trandem, Emily Johnson at stroke, Megan Lenarz, Alyssa Kast, Michelle Murphy at bow earned a near 20-second win over Kansas. The Gophers crossed the finish line in 7:18.8, while the Jayhawks chipped in times of 7:38.0 and 8:03.5. In the First Varsity Four action, Minnesota added another win. The Gophers’ boat of coxswain Monika Folker, Teresa Logemann at stroke, Tracy Merth, Kate Ladell and Christine Cira flew through their competition and the course and won their race in a time of 7:10.2. Kansas finished in 7:27.7.

Minnesota continued its domination, this time in the Second Varsity Eight. Minnesota’s boat of coxswain Ilana Ostrin, Michele Peterson at stroke, Emily Baxter, Allison Fisher, Erin Desmond, Rebekah Brzozowski, Tina Cho, Sarah Krueger and Molly Kalmoe at bow held a nearly a seven-second lead over Kansas. The Gophers earned a win with a time of 6:40.8, while the Jayhawks finished in 6:47.3

The Gophers finished the racing day with a win in the First Varsity Eight. Minnesota’s boat of coxswain Erica Niemiec, Lisa Pugh at stroke, Katherine Johnson, Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham and Cassie Drozynski at bow start the race with an early lead and continued to separate themselves from the Jayhawks throughout. By the 750-meter mark, Minnesota held a three-boat, open water lead over KU and never looked back. Minnesota finished in 6:20.2, while Kansas finished in 6:36.9

Minnesota is set to compete at the Big Ten Championships, May 2, in Columbus, Ohio. The event is schedule to run all day, starting at 8 a.m. (weather permitting). Minnesota will travel it’s full squad to the league championships, including two novice eights, the two varsity fours and two varsity eights.
