Roehrig Sets New Record in Heptathlon

Minnesota senior Liz Roehrig started the second day of the heptathlon competition at the Jim Click Shootout in Arizona knowing a big score was within reach. Her goal going into the meet was to establish a score above the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (5,500 points).
After day one, an outing that included personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles and shot put, Roehrig battled some soreness in her hamstrings as competition began today. The Golden Gopher All-American pushed through, and still managed to eclipse her own school record by two points, establishing the new mark and winning the event with 5,857 points. The mark easily bettered the NCAA automatic qualifying standard, meaning Roehrig’s next heptathlon won’t likely be until the Big Ten Championships in mid May.
“She was on pace for a 6,000-points score, which is very impressive,” said Golden Gopher head coach Matt Bingle. “Liz just didn’t feel 100 percent today so we didn’t want to push it all out. At this stage of the season, it’s best to play it safe. We made the score, but she was conservative in her effort.”
Three events make up the second day of the heptathlon - the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Roehrig attempted one long jump and merely ran the 800 meters at a relaxed pace.
Redshirt freshman Nikki Schultz finished the competition with 4,767 points, landing the No. 8 mark in school history.
The remainder of the Gopher women’s track team will compete at the Tiger Classic in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday.
